Today's Top News1. Report: Android Market plagued by malware threats Malware samples identified in Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android Market have increased 472 percent since July 2011 according to a new study issued by Juniper Networks, which blames the outbreak on the storefront's lack of a reliable upfront preview process and the absence of related checks and balances.
| Click here to view a larger version of this chart. |
The months of October and November 2011 have seen an explosion in malicious Android apps, Juniper reports--October alone experienced a month-over-month increase of 110 percent, and November is on pace to grow another 111 percent. By comparison, Juniper identified a 400 percent increase in Android malware from 2009 to the summer of 2010. Android malware is growing in sophistication as well as volume. "In the early spring, we began seeing Android malware that was capable of leveraging one of several platform vulnerabilities that allowed malware to gain root access on the device, in the background, and then install additional packages to the device to extend the functionality of the malware," Juniper states. "Today, just about every piece of malware that is released contains this capability, simply because the vulnerabilities remain prevalent in nearly 90 percent of Android devices being carried around today." Among known Android malware samples, 55 percent of threats act in one way or another as spyware. Another 44 percent are SMS Trojans, which transmit text messages to premium rate numbers owned by the attacker in the background of a legitimate application, without the consumer's knowledge. Juniper's Global Threat Center believes the Android threats are originating from the same attackers that previously wrote malicious code targeting devices running legacy versions of Symbian and Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Mobile. "The main reason for the malware epidemic on Android is because of different approaches that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google take to police their application stores," Juniper explains. "Android's open applications store model, which the lacks code signing and an application review process that Apple requires, makes it easy for attackers to distribute their malware. There is still no upfront review process in the official Android Market that offers even the hint of a challenge to malware writers that their investment in coding malware will be for naught. Until there comes a time that someone figures out a tried and true way to get malicious applications into the App Store, Android will remain the target of mobile malware writers around the world." Android powers 52.5 percent of all smartphones sold worldwide during the third quarter of 2011, more than doubling its global market share over a year ago, according to data issued earlier this week by research firm Gartner. Sales of Android smartphones topped 60 million, more than tripling sales of Symbian-based products at 19.5 million (translating to a market share of 16.9 percent, down from 36.3 percent a year ago). Apple's iPhone follows with sales of 17.3 million, up from 13.5 million a year ago; its global market share nevertheless dipped to 15.0 percent from 16.6 percent in the third quarter of 2010. 2. Apple adds false advertising charges to Amazon app store lawsuit Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) continues to pursue its App Store trademark fight against Amazon.com, alleging the digital retail giant of false advertising in an amended complaint filed Wednesday. The Apple suit, originally filed in March 2011 following the launch of the Amazon Appstore for Android, contends that the App Store brand is synonymous with its iOS mobile platform. Apple maintains the App Store's public profile faces significant damage by association with the Amazon's Android storefront, which it claims provides fewer safeguards to protect consumers from malware and data security threats. Amazon responds that the words "App Store" are generic and claims Apple does not retain exclusive rights to them--in court filings, Amazon adds that Apple can't prove that consumers would confuse the two storefronts because Apple's sells applications optimized solely for the iPhone, iPad and other iOS-based devices. But Apple's revised complaint argues Amazon falsely represented its new Kindle Fire tablet, de-emphasizing the "for Android" suffix while promoting its Appstore brand. "Amazon's use is also likely to lessen the goodwill associated with Apple's App Store service and Apple products designed to utilize Apple's App Store service by associating Apple's App Store service with the inferior qualities of Amazon's service," Apple claimed in the filing, which includes screenshots captured from the Amazon website. In July, U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton said she "probably" would deny the App Store motion, citing Apple's struggle to demonstrate "real evidence of actual confusion" among consumers. "I'm troubled by the showing that you've made so far, but that's where you're likely not to prevail at this early juncture," Hamilton said at the time, adding she would review court filings before making a final decision. The Kindle Fire offers access to the Amazon Appstore for Android as well as the Kindle e-book catalog, Amazon Instant Video and Amazon MP3. It also touts Amazon Silk, a customized browser that interfaces with Amazon's EC2 cloud server to accelerate the data consumption experience. The Wi-Fi only tablet is perhaps most notable for its price: $199--less than half the price of Apple's cheapest iPad. 3. RIM's BlackBerry Messenger v6.1 beta touts new personalization options Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) released the beta version of its BlackBerry Messenger v6.1 instant messaging application, introducing a series of new personalization tools.
| BBM users can now customize the color of chat bubbles for contacts. |
Available for download via RIM's BlackBerry Beta Zone consumer trial program, BlackBerry Messenger v6.1 incorporates many features requested by the BBM community and beta testers. Highlights include three new avatars that leverage controlled animation, meaning that motion is activated by user scrolling, as well as 12 new emoticons. BBM v6.1 also increases the character count for personal messages to 160, adds customized colors for chat bubbles and introduces camera/display photo integration. Earlier this month, RIM launched the cloud-based BBM Music service, enabling the manufacturer's 45 million BlackBerry Messenger users to build evolving, community-based music libraries shared among their friends. BBM Music users build personal music profiles featuring 50 of their favorite songs, with the flexibility to swap out as many as 25 songs each month--as BlackBerry Messenger contacts join their BBM Music Community, music from each new profile becomes available to other community members, meaning a BlackBerry owner with 25 BBM Music friends could expand their library to 1,300 full-length songs. SPOTLIGHT ON... Wait, that wireless executive said...what? Wireless industry executives are known for staying out of the weeds, for the most part, especially if they're CEOs. They often leave technical details to CTOs and other network-focused executives. By delegating this responsibility, they can focus on the overarching message for a company--the business strategy, the big themes, the brand. Still, that doesn't mean they won't flub every once in a while. FierceWireless compiled this list of some of the most memorable quotes from wireless industry executives. Your mission, should choose to accept it, is to match up the quote correctly to the executive who is responsible for it.
